I had fun while in Iraq. I got back in June06. The fun you have is different than at home. I enjoyed seeing the country, it was something new everyday. Trying to spot and avoid IED became somewhat of a game (a serious one of course) it felt good to get from point a to b safely. Then in our down time on base we made the best of it...watching the donkeys try to get on base so they can get fed was always amusing. Communicating with the Turkish and Iraqis on base was always interesting. We played silly practical jokes on each other and made the best out of it. The rush you get from knowing you had a close call is an interesting feeling to..it makes you giddy afterward.
The point is when you are faced with the same types of dangers and situations everyday you adapt and make the most out of it. Half the stuff that was funny to us there wouldn't be funny here but humans are very resilient and adapt quickly to a new type of life. I don't want to go back to Iraq but I have fond memories of my time there. I wasn't faced with what the guys down south deal with but we still got attacked so it wasn't a cake walk. I still stay in touch with my Iraqi translators and worry about them daily. Its a strange situation.

I would not say that I had 'fun.' But then again I was not sent there for a vacation. I will admit that the feeling of doing something worthwhile was nice to have.
There were many people who enjoyed being deployed. I have one fried who volunteered for a second tour in Afghanistan.

i had fun while in iraq (on my first deployment) the reason i ahd fun was i was put in many combat situations. im active duty MOS 11B (infantry). the adrenlin rush you get in combat is incredible, wed get shot at almost every day and blown up alot. we were rolling in Brads so they IEDs back then didnt penitrate the armor.
on my second deployment (still doing) i got stuck behind a desk not many oppurtunities for combat because of that and the situations have changed along with some other things. not so much fun this time

I have heard of vets having fun in Iraq and Afghanistan. They love their job and if everything goes well why wouldn't they enjoy it?

I had a great time...I am in the reserves and have been activated twice...The toughest part is being away from my family...If I didn't like it I would have never reenlisted while active duty or signed up into the reserves...Yes war is tough and I have seen combat; but somebody has to do it and luckily we have people that enjoy being soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen.

Id like to know what her job was while she was stationed there. I was there back in the 90's, the first time we went and I can tell you that there was nothing fun about hunting terrorists in the desert. I would go back again if I could to defend my country though.

Always thinking that you head will be shot off, or you have to shoot someone, don't know how much fun that would be. Missing your friends and family back home would be horrible, also.
