Jesus brought people to BELIEVE.

He can only TRY to get people to listen to their hearts.

I think Jesus couldn't care less about the athiests. Either people are drawn to Jesus, or they aren't. God looks after the ones that are drawn to the Son.

John 3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

If they couldn't believe then, when he was right there, and came just as prophesied (which is why Herod killed every child his age) how can we be surprised that people don't believe today? He thinks the same of them today as he did back then.. and it breaks his heart.

He certainly would have been amused by the notion, knowing it to be different. A bit like how we would react if someone were to try to tell us that the phone company doesn't exist. I'd laugh, too...

I don't think there were many atheists back then. Everyone believed what they were told to because they didn't know any better.
