globus hystericus’ - a psychological condition. It can be treated very effectively by a clinical psychologist or by some other psychological therapy such as cognitive therapy. The second most likely - and it is much LESS likely - is a problem of acid reflux from the stomach - again usually quite simply treated and can be diagnosed by a gastroenterologist who will do an X-ray or endoscopy. The third possibility is the dreaded one you are thinking about - a tumour or cancer of some kind. With this story you have given this is very, very unlikely. The same investigation for reflux would show a cancer if there was one. The important thing here is that it is making your life miserable and it is time it was sorted out.

It might be achalasia. It is where the muscles in your esophagus stop working. It is common in 40+ men, but in my family there have been diagnoses as young as 19. Check in with your doctor. He will have a better idea.

You should definitely go see a doctor. It could be an infection in your throat.I had a similar problem, couldn't swallow for almost a year.It turned out that I had an infection due to smoking! If you smoke and can't quit, smoke lighter cigarettes!it worked for me!
