so, it just went to the bottom of the cage and layed one egg. How does bird reproduction work? What should we do with the egg? It doesn't have a mate but there is a parakeet in the same cage with a wire wall between them. Could they have...? What do you think?

I strongly disagree with the previous responses. I have five birds, four of them hens and have dealt with them laying eggs many times.

First, no, they could not have mated through the wall. In order to mate, the male has to physically mount the female and that would have been impossible. They don't have external sexual organs.

Second, reproduction does not require a male. She's laying infertile eggs because nature tells her it's a mating season. Nature being amount of daylight (she must be getting 12+ hours of daylight and noise), extra food (more than enough to feed her and enough to, in fact, feed her young), nesting area (she has the resources to make a safe nest for her young), or she's being petted in a way that stimulates her the way a mate would.

Third, do NOT remove the egg. Removing the egg stimulates the natural thought process that the egg has been stolen by predators and to continue the spawning process that is natural instinct, she lays more and more to replace the missing eggs. This drains her body of energy and calcium, and especially if she is already lacking in calcium due to a poor diet, she could become eggbound. All that means is eggs will become lodged in her cloaca (canal) and if she doesn't pass it and a vet can't get it out, she'll die. If the vet has to take her under the knife for a drastic, invasive surgery, even the anesthetic can kill her or she may never wake up. To avoid situations like this, cover her cage with a dark sheet and leave her in silence for at least 12 hours a night and monitor her feeding so that she is only eating enough for herself. Give her LOTS of calcium - spinach or kale in moderation (too much can bind calcium and be counterproductive) and cuttlefish or mineral blocks.

Incubation naturally takes about a month for small parrots. Leave the eggs with her until she becomes her normal self again, and yes, this means she will be cranky and territorial until this happens, but it is MUCH safer than blindly taking all the eggs out as she lays them. Allow her to lay a full clutch, normally around four eggs, and when she gets up and leaves them to do other things (play with toys, play with you) and has lost all interest in the eggs, then you can remove them. By that point, she'll know they aren't hatching and will leave them as dead/dud eggs.

For a bird to simply lay an egg, it's not required that they have a mate. That's only required for fertilization. We also had a friend who's parrot layed an egg (very unexpectedly while we were taking care of it!). We just removed it and threw it away.

Birds can lay eggs without mating. It is just nature's way of continuing the species, but most times the eggs are infertile.

The male mounts the female. They copulate for 1=3 seconds. many birds lay infertile eggs. Increase her calcium and protein intake by giving her chopped egg with the shell 3 times a week. Remove the egg and chuck it. (Throw it away). After a week. have a nice day.

ha ha Um once the egg is layed the egg is layed you are able to fertilize them once achieved. you should purchase an rather youthful male because lovebirds popular favor to attack noticeably close to a nest. that is in case you want toddler lovebirds. The male will with have sex even as see is able to make a egg then the egg comes out and the that's fertilized.. obviously see is hooked as a lot because the eggs yet they are fertilized.. get a towel and grab the eggs from the nest.. use a towel because it is going to quit you getting bitten. ;) good success
