Use recipes off of the boxes for confectioners sugar (powdered sugar). Or get a cookbook out of the library. Or look it up online.

The easiest way is to put water and powdered sugar or confectioner's sugar together but make sure you add only a drop or two of water at a time for a two layer cake it will take about 2 cups of sugar to about 1/4 cup of water. You can add food coloring also but watch it as it will thin out the icing. If you want frosting then you will add about 1/4 of a cup of either shorting or in the case of butter cream frosting, then you will add butter or margarine.

This icing is sinful and will harden like a thin layer of fudge around the cake.

combine
1 stick butter
1/4 cup hershey's cocoa powder
1/3 cup milk
stir over low heat till butter melts, then bring to a boil over medium heat
take pan off stove and stir in 1 box 10x sugar
add 1tsp vanilla (and nuts if you like)
beat with mixer till smooth
spread while warm over chilled cake

use a cake mix from a box but always make your own icing!

Combine some powdered sugar and butter and whipp them together they should be a thick but not a crumbly texture then add just a little bit of milk enough to soften it up to the consistency that you want and that should be it, and if you want to color it then add some food coloring, also you probably should add some vanilla extract, if you don't mind the color use te regular but if you want it as white as possible there is some clear vanilla extract that you can buy at pretty much any store. Hope this helps. this is normal iceing but if you want some that tastes like the filling in oreos heres a link: http://www.wilton.com/recipes/recipesandprojects/icing/bcream.cfm?section=cake&subsection=icing&tertiary=icingrecipes

There are SO many wonderful frosting recipes! You didn't say if you wanted vanilla, flavored or chocolate. Buttercream? Whipped cream? Boiled?
You might want to do a Google search and take a look at all of the recipes, then pick your favorite! Good luck.

position 3 strips of waxed paper lower than the first one in a triangle, out in route of the outer edges. position first cake down on that. placed some icing in midsection and spread. position 2d cake on properly. Ice properly, and then ice facets. Pull the waxed paper out and your plate can be sparkling and it is going to seem large!
