When I joined the Navy, I understood that the possibility was there that I may have to fight for my country in a war. That is why they give out benefits.

I joined the military right out of High School (Back in 1981) and I knew very well my chances of getting sent to a combat zone were good. Benefits and other considerations were not even a factor until after i joined, and had been in the military for a couple of years...

Four and five years ago, when a surprising percentage of my teenage students were joining the military, I spoke with each one of them at least once about their willingness to actually serve in a war. All of them were going in for the benefits, did not believe anything would ever be expected of them. (Some teacher I am, eh?) And guess what. Every single one of them has managed to worm out since things got serious.
On the positive side, the young folks in my neighborhood (I moved) who've been to war and come back have turned into gloriously responsible, positive, caring, effective people. I hope the war was as good for the Iraqis as it was for them.

A young friend of mine just went knowing he has a 100% chance of going to Iraq...he did it for the schooling in the military and the GI Bill....It is the only way to get an education if you can't afford school.
