I never thought about this but in most cases there is no need for the child to know because the parent deals with payments and what have you.
I would say that the teen years would be the time to let them know but they should know the dangers of handing the number out to just anyone because of identity theft and if you don't think your teen can be trusted don't let your teen know their number. It is so easy for people to get ahold of such an important peace of information, and the last thing you want is your child to have a battle with identity theft

I knew I had a social security card but really didn't need to know the number or anything until I was old enough to apply for a job or I went off to college and then you have to use it for everything.

My mom tried teaching me it at a very young age, I think I was seven only because if something were to happen like say a car accident and I survived, they can identify who I was without needing anything else. I guess it is up to you but I think your children should be taught it as soon as they can possibly remember it.

Its probably a better time to teach them when they are 15yr. old, when they learn how to drive, etc. I'm 17 and it was easier to memorize when my mom gave me my ssn and told me that I should memorize it because we have to use it for job applications as well as took take school tests like the PSATs and SATs and FCAT(the state test in Florida). I don't think its necessary to teach it to young children because they don't really need it. If for some unseen event occurs, like you are in a car accident, have a card or something in your walet/purse or car saying "My name is.... I live at.....My phone number is.......
I have children who are ....yr. old. Their ssn are .........
They go to school at...... They're babysitter is...." Things along those lines that can help authorities identify your child if something should happen.

I never really thought about it until I saw your question...I would say around the time your child starts to drive or look for their first job would be early enough. That's when I learned mine.

When I took my 16 yr old to get his license and he needed it, I gave it to him and told him he needs to memorize this number because he will need to know it many times in the future.
