Its not just the pruduct but the straightener as well. Don't be afraid to buy a quality straightner. You will see the results with a higher quality opposed to a low quality straightener. I suggest you look for a product that protects hair which you can coat onto your strands while DRY. I use a brand called CHI which may or may not be expensive whereever you are. It works great even with an average straightener. Also talk to your local hairdresser about products they'd suggest. You could schedule a quick appointment where they straighten your hair [and since they know what they're doing it will turn out perfect] and then ask what they used on it, how you can copy it,ect. Your natural hair also pays a major roll in keeping your strands straight. Try everything you can and if it all fails you could try chemical straightening. Good luck!

It won't fade away. That's the bad part. It stays FOREVER until you chop it off. When your hair grows out it does not blend, it just stays stick straight, so after a while the line is totally obvious of where the straight ends and curly begins. It looks really wierd. But, you can keep it for almost a year depending on how fast your hair growshad the Japanese hair straightening done about 3 years ago at the salon at LaBelle. I had full-head of highlighted hair at the time but no one seemed to be concerned about that (now I constantly hear, particularly after having worked at the front desk of a high-end hair salon, that those experienced with the chemicals will NEVER do the process on highlighted hair).
I was one of those flat-iron slaves and looked forward to the whole wash-and-go routine. I had slightly wavy hair that was capable of a nice curl. It looked amazing when we finished, shiny and soft. However, once I washed it, it seemed like my normal hair... although heavier and strange. It far from dried perfectly straight. It had an ugly kink to it, so I still was forced to blowdry and straighten as before. I called the salon and the repeated the process but nothing changed. I'm lucky my hair didn't fall out or break off completely! And worse, I couldn't get a nice wave into it--even after the process had grown out!
Obviously everyone has different hair, but it IS a huge investment. I'd recommend speaking to a few different stylists to see their opinions on your hair. From what I've heard, if you color, any reputable stylist will make you grow out the color before performing the process...

You can either do this at home, or at a salon, and it should last for a lot longer than 8 hours. Do a Reverse Perm. Ya go to a Salon, and they put the perm lotion on (no rods) then comb, and comb, and comb until your hair is perfectly straight, they might even condition it. Then they shampoo it and dry it and you're all set!

What kind of hair do you have? How damaged is it? How much are you willing to spend?
The absolute best thing to do is ask your stylist. Be sure to be precise about what you want, how much up keep, how well it'll do under stress from the sun and humidity.

I had good luck with Bedhead Manipulator. You got to be sure to use a little, otherwise you'll look like a greaser from the 50's.
