You can do a lot with tile. Try adding a medallion or mosiac insert in the center of your floor

I recently put down a floor using prefinished hardwood and I used a dark color for the body of the floor and a border of lighter colored hardwood approximately 9 inches (3 rows). The cabinets were dark for this remodel but it turned out looking pretty sharp. I don't see why the opposite shades would not be an option for you. Maybe something to think about.

Try cement. I don't know where you are, but polished cement tiles are great and low maintence. If its a basement or ground level floor (with no basement), have cement poured and you can paint it with a semi gloss in any colour. The best thing is that you can change the paint colour when you get bored of the colour and its a great base for anything you might want to do on top of it one day (tile, marble, etc...)

Have a look at a product called Karndean. Its basically a vinyl but the appearance ranges from stone, marble, wooden, mosaic and many many more. the effects that can be produced by a proffesional are just amazing, true works of art. some of the designs i have come accross look like they have cost thousands, they really can do just about anything.

Ceramic tiles can be really nice, but the downside is that they can also be very cold to walk on bearfoot.
You could also go for cushioned flooring -- I know that sounds a little "old granny" but you can get some seriously good flooring patterns there nowadays.

i have heated floors with large limestone tiles on top look great and you can have rugs with it not cheap though. The cheap and effective thing to do if you want a change is simply to paint your wooden floors can look great if you choose the right colour!

Oh you are looking for the WOW factor are you. And you thought you would find it on Yahoo answers? How intriguing.
Try a woven fabric commonly referred to as "carpet". It is very popular.

Tiles are good, lots of styles, colours and materials available. Not necersarily expensive either. You can also buy an under tile heating system as well.
