OK bud I just went through this with my wife. She wanted a dog, and I am allergic, plus I have asthma.
Here is what you can get and why. Basically you can get any breed that has hair, not fur. That is dogs that need hair cuts, such as Poodles, Wire hair Terriers there are few and I am sure I would miss one or two if I tried. If you want a large dog again I am sure I will miss a few but a Standard or Giant Schnauzer, An Irish Wolf Hound, A Portuguese Water Dog. Once you start looking at the breed and seeing the coats your will understand.
You need to stay away from anything with and oily coat and dander that is what bothers us. Dogs such as Labs , Golden Retrieves which are the worst, jack Russel's, Dobermans, Dachens,.
Now Shepperd are strong now, because I can tolerate a German Sherpard, and my friend 's Border Collier does not both me either. But the shed like anything and would not suggest it.
I have owned a Poodle for 18 yrs. She died about 3 yrs ago.
I just got a Mini Schnauzer last week and he won't leave my site when I am home not a problem at all.

Look at AKC web site they break all the breeds down.

Most terriers have hair not fur which is why they do not shed but the thing you HAVE to know before you get one is how much grooming they require i own a airedale terrier she is around 50 pounds and WAS considered "king of the terriers" becasue they were the largest terriers (damn black russian terriers) in the CKC any dog you pat that isnt smooth but has a wire coat is considered hypoallergenic but even smaller terriers require hours of grooming monthly airedales hair is not cut but rather pulled for show this takes a trainer groomer anywhere from 6-8 hours and MUST be maintained otherwise the hair can kind of curl and grow back into the dogs skin at which point any touch will be very painful for the animal

another type of dog i like (for a small dog that is) is the lake land terrier i know of a breeder in Nova Scotia by the name of Mark Wambat who would be an awesome source of additional info, also check out the book "dogs of canada" if your in canada that is it has a list of every breeder that is in the CKC in the country and of every type of dog

also might want to consider the fact that after owning a dog you build an immunity to their dander and they will no longer bother you after a certian amount of time and therefore dont need one that doesnt shed

the only small dogs that will never shed are a Toy or Teacup Poodle or a Bichon Frise . But keep in mind, the reason these dogs don't shed is because they have hair insted of fur. Kind of like human hair, so it has to be taken care of. They are good little dogs, but A LOT of hard work. Personally I'd rather spend the time vacuuming up pet hair...that's just me though.

They say poodle sheds very little if at all.I had a chihuahua and she never shed a bit, but she was almost hairless. If you keep them inside, then you get them groomed, so don't worry.Unless you are allergic..A poodle just needs hair cuts......

Poodles are the best dogs in the WORLD. You can get them in three registered sizes. (there are four according to some people, however, there are only three that register) Standard poodles are huge. Miniture are significantly smaller and are about two feet tall standing head to floor. Toy are the smallest. (others consider "teacup" an actual size for a poodle, but it isn't) Poodles are easy to train, easy maintenance, and obedient dogs. They come in black, white, blue, silver, and apricot. They are adorable dogs that are loyal and true to their owner.

After you have sorted out all the differences between hair and fur, and decided on the size of dog you want, try the animal shelters and rescue organizations and give a homeless, but worthly doggie a good home!! It will be the best non-purchase you will ever make!!

Poodles! There are toy or miniature poodles (standard poodles are bigger). Poodles do not shed. Be very selective of the breeder that you get one from. Pet stores, puppy mills (folks who breed lots of puppies of different breeds), backyard breeders, and just "average" people who bred their two poodles together do NOT qualify as good breeders.

poodles they are the only dogsthat do not shed. expireance. toy or minatures.

if you get a poodle mix with something like a laber-doodle the puppy could be more like the lab and shed a lot or it could be more like the poodle parent and shed a little.

for people with allergies like my dad you should deffinatly chose poodle that was my families only choice they are really cute.
