I have a 3 year old shitzu that was my grandmothers dog up until about a year ago. We broke him of an aggrassion problem and thought he was going to make a great family pet. Than my husband and I went on a trip for a week and when we came back he was a completely dfifferent dog, He is constantly humping our other dog, who is a male. And I mean tp the point of complete exhaustion, he isnt eating as much because hes too busy humping. And if we try to stop him he goes back into the aggressive barking snarling and biting. He bit my son on the leg todau when he tried to get daughters doll from other dog and interupted the shitzu. We have thought through and the only options are neuter him and see if it works, if not put him down. Or just put him down. I dont want to give him away and have him bite someone else. I guess i dont know what to do . Its alot harder being grandmas dog also. And he is fairly young to be put down.

I forgot to mention that this is his 3rd home because of behavior problems. And I cannot afford to put my kids through special classes , there is no way I am going to fork out money for a dog to go to the therapist!

I hate to say it, but a shitzu is the worst dog in the world. Not only do they have crappy dispositions, but they have a miriad of health problems. My friend had one that cost him a mint with eye problems, ear problems, skin problems, disposition problems, etc. He actually had to feed it by hand or it wouldn't eat. It also used to stink really bad. In the end he spent a fortune and the dog only lived to be around 6.

Do know why he isn't neutered now but that would be a good first step. Second his humping seems like a dominance issue. In this case I would hire a qualified behaviorist which should work out your problems

Here are some good tips to look at especially the nothing in life is free. You can try calling their behavior helpline.

What you should always do when first getting a dog is taking the dog to the vet to make sure it has a clean bill of health. Obviously you think that the breeder didn't go a very good job of taking care of your dog... this might mean that she failed to take the dog to regular vet visits. Take the dog to the vet regardless of whether or not this might be a serious health problem. You can tell the vet what is happening as well as make sure your dog is healthy in all other aspects. Next time make sure that you buy from a reputable breeder who takes the pups/dogs to the vets and gives you paperwork so you can make sure the pup/dog is healthy before you take it home.

We used to have a shitzu and his behavior was almost the same. The dog needs to get used to you. The week without seeing you surely made him feel lonely. It will take a while but you should approach him yourself first and then reintroduce him to your children for saftey. If still no prevail we will eventually get used to you but it will be quicker if you give him some attention. Same with just about everything but please don't put him down.

Getting him neutered would be a great place to start. You may need to report the bite to your local animal control agency, so check into that. If you can't fix the problem on your own or through a professional trainer, the only other option is to euthanize the dog. Because of this behavior history, there is a slim chance he would be adoptable to another home. Good luck!

Get him neutered as soon as possible and get him some training classes. This should help him out. Maybe play with him more and give him excerise to wear him out. Take him for walks or to the park and let him be outside a lot.

Neuter him and go from there. Chances are a lot of these problems will fix themselves. I'd be very weary of a dog that would bite one my family members though.

Neutering him will get rid of some of that behavior...don't put him down please if he isn't sick. Although if he does bite children, you might want to find a family that has no children for him to be around but first try the neuter.

You can always go back to trying to re-train. He needs to be told who is the leader of the pack. As of now, he is. He probably got back into his old habits when he was away from you. This is going to take time and discipline. good luck.
