It has been my experience that zener diodes from different manufacturers don't really have a consistent "code" which can be relied upon to indicate the value.
I have found that often the voltage rating is incorporated into the part number - but not always.
The best method is to have the actual schematic of the circuit and the part will be clearly indicated - along with any generic substitutes.
Short of that, try and cross reference the part on the NTE website or just Google the number stamped on the component.
The number you refer to in your question doesn't cross in any of my references - and 1N48 (w/o the "PH") crosses to a Ge quick switching diode - not a zener, so that's not a good sign that a cross will be easily found without the data from the manufacturer.

The best way to find out about a part is to look at a data sheet.

You can try looking on the digikey.com web site as they provide data sheets for the parts they stock.

You may have to do a search google/yahoo search to find a data sheet for an older part. I found one for the 1n48 in a minute see link...

Go to Radio shack and ask them for the parts book for their stores.
Or look online . Also maybe a cross reference book?

1N48PH isn't listed in my book.
The 1N series are rectifier diodes.
