I want a small dog under 30 pounds. I don't want one that is, or looks like a terrier. And preferably a dog that doesn't have long hair and is pretty calm. And not yippit, or yappity.

If you can provide quality time 3-6 hrs. during daylight hours per- day for the first year of their life consider a Miniature Pincher. It's a short haired long legged muscular handsome dog that weighs appproximately 11 lbs. Some are extremely active and run in your house driving you crazy. Ours is is alert and protective. They are better than an alarm clock when ever anyone strange comes near your house. Ours has never barked unnecessarily. He and our house cat play often. There are two things to be seriously aware of. Never let them off leash out doors unless you have an enclosed dog run. Be particularly aware of the dog while children play with them. Not because the dog will bite but there may be a possibly children may be too rough with them. This breed legs are tall, muscular and thin. If a leg is accidently bent in the wrong direction they will easily break. They love to twist themselves in a blanket while sleeping or crawl inside your sweat shirt to take a nap. We have found that by providing a plastic dog carying box in our home gives the animal their quality home space. At this time we don't bother top close the door on his "house" at night. Have a fun time while you shop!

I say a PUG. They seem to be the perfect dog. I have a female (named PAPRIKA) and she is 3 years old. She weighs 16 lbs. She is extra clean in the house, if i didnt force her to go outside to pee she would lay inside for 2 days i think. She is so calm and when she does get up to play around she is the funniest thing you will ever see. It takes alot to get my husband to pay attention to dogs as much as i do but ever since i brought her home he is laughing his head off! He loves her. She is smart..the latest thing my husband taugh her what to do is give him a high five. It took him about 15 minutes to teach her.

I think you would be very happy with a pug. They are small like you want..does not have long hair, calm and not yippity or yappity at all. And the cutest (and funniest) dog you will find!

Good luck with whatever you decide.

I have a pug and know a lot about the breed. They have short hair but do shed a lot. They don't bark unless provoked (like a lot of other small dogs do). They are great dogs but during the first 3 years or so of their lives, they can be very wild. After that, they are couch potatoes, like cats.

French Bulldog. They are less than 28lbs., they are short haired, and shed only a little. The do not bark much, they are very laid back, and they are very social. Plus they are really cute!!!

You could also try a Pug or a Boston Terrier, but my preference is for the French Bulldog.

It'll be pretty hard to find a small dog that doesn't yip. The smaller they get, the higher pitched their bark gets. And most small dogs are hyper when they are young. I would suggest going to a local library and checking out a book on different dog breeds, or go online and look for websites for dog owners, and then ask people there that have small dogs.

I would say toy poodle :) I used to have one, and seeing you have other dogs, it would be good because they are easily trained! When I got mine he fit in the palm of my hand:) there are definitely toy poodles that arebin need of rescue because people want them when they are tiny and cute, but get rid of them when they are mid age, because they can't handle it. It's sad.:(

How about a Cardigan Welsh Corgi or a Malti poo or a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel or a Shiba Inu

A Boston Terrier!!! The best dog I have ever had!!!! She never barks unless I tell her to. Oh and if you have a cat Boston Terriers are the most compatible with cats. We have a cat and they are best buddies!!!

Italian greyhounds are a great small breed. They have the same characteristics of a large greyhood but much smaller. very well tempered dogs with short hair and not yappy :)
