I have seen the Texas Home School Coalition Association website so that I could get an idea for a withdrawal letter to the principal. On this site it says to send a copy of the withdrawal letter to them also or to call them if there are any problems . Do I need to be a paid member with this Texas Home School Coalition, do I have to send them a copy of the withdrawal letter, or is this only if Im a member of this? This will be my first time homeschooling my oldest son ( with Aspergers Syndrome) and I am just trying to figure out everything I need to do to take him out of school.Thank you !

Getting involved with the THSC would be precautionary, but shouldn't be necessary. You are certainly within your legal rights if you only withdraw him and provide the school with the letter. Nothing else is necessary. We withdrew our son from a Texas school four years ago, provided his school with a letter of assurance, and that was the end of it. We've had no problems.

Become a member of the HSLDA and request to see a sample "letter of intent" to go by. (see ideas below) DO not do a withdrawal if the child is not registered at a public school.
You should keep a copy, you should send a copy to the School Board and do a "cc" to the HSLDA.

Do not volunteer any information besides what is listed, do not be pressured into signing or filling other forms. They are not necessary. If you are not sure, simply say: "I must first consult with my lawyer before I make a decision, thank you"
Write down what they said, or wanted, then verify.

You are not a criminal. They also can not act agressive towards you or be threatening. Be polite, be short, to the fact, and nothing else. Do not fear.

There are a lot of resources on the net you can use to build an appropriate homeschool for you and your son, please enjoy this new experience with him!

You don't need to become a member of any of THSCA or H$LDA. There are other places to get the same thing they offer for cheap or free online.
Here is a link to a copy of a letter of assurance or letter of intent FOR texas...
http://www.nthen.org/images/assurance_letter.pdf

http://www.nthen.org/ is their general website.
http://www.nthen.org/aboutS_2.html is about pulling a child out of school to homeschool them. There are national organizations both faith based and non faith based, that will offer you all the info you need to homeschool, do it well, and legally.
There are lots of articles out there online, books in libraries, that have lots of good information. Sift thru it, see what you want and what you don't. You don't need to be a member of anything to homeschool in Texas. They belong to the NIKE school of home ed. LOL JUst do it.
Home education magazine has a great section on state laws, and links to local, state and national groups on their website. That is where I'd recommend you start.
A Texas yahoo group for homeschoolers in your area of the state would be good too. There are several.

You don't need to have anything to do with the Texas Home School Coalition. Just send your letter to the principal and keep a copy for yourself.
