What I'm wondering is if anyone knows of a haircolor that is gentle and yet works to lighten and not turn my hair red

This is what I do, at school I use Blond Dimensions (powder bleach) sit for 20-25min or until you like the results, then I tone mine with a beige blond to get out the gold tones. My hair is naturally medium brown, still healthy, I still recommend going to a salon.

Lemon juice, mayo and pepper for an hour, under shower cap. silky smooth. It works for my clients.
