I'll note that nothing is ever said about titles like "The Craft", "Charmed" or "Practical Magic".
What, is it more fun to go after someone who'll deny it?
You have any idea how silly it makes you look lobbying against a fictional character? If you don't like it, don't read it. Let the rest of us decide for ourselves no?

Ya I remember the D&D bein' Evil thing. Siva knows I've rolled the dice a few times myself. And I remember how the more firmly they denied it the worse it got. I've heard about Charmed and The Craft getting flak but nothing like what the Potter kid gets.
At any rate I've been reading all the anti-Potter stuff kicking around the net and it's just laughable.
I AM a Witch. And there is very, very, VERY little parallel between that world and ours, I can assure you.

Um... then you haven't looked very hard. This is nothing new. And "The Craft" has had similar backlash against it from Christians, though not quite as widespread, because it wasn't a popular children's novel.
I don't know if you're old enough to remember the whole "Dungeons and Dragons is EEEEVUL!" hysteria, but it was the same sort of thing. People attacking something that was current in pop culture because a) they didn't understand it and b) they were afraid of it.

I'm a Christian and I love the Harry Potter books! :) But I do know why some people have refused to read them - the Bible says to not participate in any kind of sorcery or witchcraft (Deut. 18:10 and Galatians 5:20 are two references to this effect). So some people try to stay away from anything associated with witchcraft in ANY way including Harry Potter (who attends a school of witchcraft and wizardry), TV shows like Charmed, and movies like the The Craft. I personally am not tempted into sin by watching these shows and reading these books and do not feel that I am involved with witchcraft by reading a book or watching a film but I understand that some people want to stay away from anything that even mentions evil. I can't judge them harshly for their decisions in these matters and I hope they won't judge me for my opinions either. I hope this helps explain to you why some people are opposed to Harry Potter though. :)

Fundamentalists believe in forcing others to believe in what they belive. And some even consider as "evil" the TV box, calling it names such as the Devil's Box".
To them Harry Potter is an encouragement to the practice of Paganism, and I doubt most of them know the true meaning of the word "pagan".
Lucky for you and me, we live where there is freedom of speach and freedom of cult. Otherwise, we would only be watching movies and reading books created by fundamentalists, and forced to abide by their religious dictatorships.

It's a good thing burning people at the stake isn't legal but I've heard rumors the fundies would like to reinstate it along with impalement. Maybe the fundies feel theatened by a really good story.

unfortunatly many of my fellow christians spend ther days seeking out evil( if you look you will always find)instead of looking for good in things i think if they put more emphasis an the fact that the potter books are teaching that good will prevale it would do them more good than finding evil everywhere I think some could find evil even in scripture!

Because they're psycho. Its just entertainment. Like... well... pretty much every story out there. I guess Cinderella isn't acceptable either to them. They must not let their kids watch Saturday morning cartoons.
