wooden floor in a house i have to be rented will it be a good fire proofing method or should i not bother

sound proofer maybe, not fire proofing.

It wouldn't be much of an additional barrier to a fire. The usual reason for putting hardboard down over old floorboards is to provide a smoother surface for vinyl or carpet.

It could be you could get some hard board that has been treated to be more fire resistant because it is a composit material I know you can get tempered hardboard to stop it shrinking when laying tiles with wet adhesive.

Only if you are laying something down on it, do you know hardboard burns also.
