Desperate for assurance and a cure

I have panic attacks. A few years ago, I became almost completely agorophobic.

I've tried a number of meds. I don't know how much they helped.

What DID help was counseling and Lucinda Bassett's program (see below). It was worth the expense of purchasing this program. But if you can't afford it, go to the library and check out her book "From Panic to Power." Her other book "Life Without Limits" is also great.

Deep breathing and getting control of my thoughts were the most powerful weapons against panic. Breathe in to a slow count of 2 and out to a slow count of 4. In through the nose, out through the mouth (like slowly blowing out a candle). Breathe into your abdomen, not your chest. Makes a big difference.

For me, panic feels like: racing heart, closing throat, dry mouth, numbness or tingling in my hands, tingling scalp, weak legs, impending sense of doom or death, walls closing in, choking feeling.

I still carry water with me everywhere I can go. It is like a security blanket. I've gotten less freaked out about finding myself without it though. I'm functioning at about 98% now. Very few things I can't do.

A big tip to keep it from getting worse--DON'T STOP DOING ANYTHING THAT CAUSES YOU PANIC!!! This makes it worse. Work your way THROUGH the panic. Encourage yourself all the way through. Panic will not kill you. These are physical responses to irrational thoughts in your head. Get control of the thoughts, and you won't have the symptoms anymore.

I had a panic attack a few months ago ( never had one b4 that) & I thought I was going to die. I was visibly shaking & very short of breath, had to have an emergency doctor as I really thought that was it...... found it hard to communicate & just wanted to lay down quietly. After reassurances from the doc of what was happening felt a lot better straight away....... he prescribed Beta Blockeres which I didn't take..... I'm not into things like that ...I know people who were prescribed them years ago & are still on them. You really need to control your breathing, slo w it down ....get a big paper bag and breathe in & out of it which will eventually use up all the air inside it & by this time your attack should have subsided or at lease be under your control.....thats what its about, you getting back in control. I believe St.Johns Wort tablets are good to take to relieve anxiety/panic & lavender oil on your pillow & temples at night can also be beneficial. I know how you feel & really do hope I have helped.... the very best of luck with it

Me, although diminished as I aged. Symptoms were usually on public transport when I just got sort of huges waves of panicky feelings, dry mouth, sweating, feeling I was going to let myself down in public by going mad or fainting or pushing my way off the train or bus. Horrible. Bach's Rescue Remedy is supposed to help but I didn't really notice much difference. Dabbing a little Frankincense on your coat lapel is a nice calming smell I think, some like lavender instead. Otherwise, see a kinesiologist who should be able to make you up a potion to suit your individual needs. Best of luck, oh and breathing into a brown paper bag DOES help as you're re-breathing CO2 without so much O2.

I suffered terribly from panic attacks. I went to my GP and he put me on Valium which didnt work - friends said breathe into a brown paper bag but that didnt work either. Eventually I found that carrying a small bottle of spray water (Evian or magicool) in my bag stopped the attacks in their tracks. It seems that cooling the pulse points can stop the attack and so I used to spray my wrists and face ASAP and my breathing would regulate and it stopped the full blown attack. Try it - it worked for me and other people I've spoken to. As for symptoms - I thought I was gonna die each time. My throat would close up, my heart felt like it was bursting, I thought I was having a heart attack and I couldnt breathe. Good luck and hope yours stop too xxxx

chat to your GP. panic attacks are pretty common, and im sure they could give you much better advice than i could.
there are so many support groups/counsellors out there who could probably help. i dont know about any herbal remedies to cure panic attacks, but things like st johns wart can calm you down, and there are things like peppermint oil tablets that can relieve any stomach cramps. its often easier to relieve the symptoms than to actually treat the panic attacks, if that makes any sense.
but please chat to someone.they can talk to you easier than anyone on Answers can, and they can give you the reassurance you need. you are not some sort of freak - panic attacks are so common. check out www.bbc.co.uk/health for a great section on mental illness and anxiety disorders. :)

I have used crystal therpay successfully. I believe in crystals & think they're a gift from mother nature.
The ones that are excellent for panick attacks are:
Sodalite & Kunzite. I placed the sodalite on my solar plexus (that's where I used to get them) & after a little whle they're gone! You can get crystals at specilat shops, Rock'n'Gem shows & also Ebay. I bought a Sodlaite cross which hangs over my solar plexus which re-assures me. Kunzite is also an excellent one to get.
Please remember crydtals need clenasing as they absorb energy & reain for example negative energy. u can do this by placing them in sea salt water for 10-24 hours or full moonlight or in brown rice for 24 hours(u can eat the rice after).
I hope this helps!
Also avoid caffeine religiously( in coffe, tea, coke etc, & dark chocolate )
with luv

I am not any expert, but can pass on what helped a friend.
Try to relax with a nice hot bath with lavender oil added to it.
Then when you are dry lie back in a relaxing chair and put a few drops of lavender (not Lavendin! as this can burn) just below your nose & rub it in gently.
If you cannot have the bath, you can do the second, but you must stop doing anything & focus on the aroma & allow it time to get through to your brain, the with the natural lavenders's help you must believe (& preferably pray ) & pull yourself though.

You need to get to the root of what is causing the panic attacks. I don't know your exact situation. Maybe something happened and now you're thinking about it and fearing it happening again. Like I say, I don't know your exact situation.

I would strongly recommend hypnotherapy. It could help you get to the root of why you feel panicky and help you deal with it.

Solutions: not herbal, but try this: walking in nature, other mild exercise, and avoid coffee after mid-afternoon.

Symptoms: feel like I am going mad, runny guts, chest pains, unable to think.
