you mean the big dial that goes off when you push it in?

that makes it like a panic or kill switch

so if your clothes get caught and the washer is pulling you in, you can flail around and smack the swith can turn it off.

much easier than it would be to pull it

Because when you open the lid to add clothes or adjust an unbalanced load chances are the lid will press against the knob. It is far safer to have the machine shut off when the knob is depressed. (Yes there is the spin interlock on the cover as well)

The button has to be engaged (depressed) to change the settings on the machine (normal load, delicate load, etc...) Since you don't want the washer running while you're changing the settings, the button is down for off and up for on...

That is so you don't accidentally turn it on if you bump the switch when placing something on top of the washer or if you bump into it.while walking by if it's a front loader.

Mine's an Indesit & on is when depressed.
