I agree, start with a cheaper bass first.

As for learning how to play....

At home, start by practicing moving your right hand (the one that will pluck the strings). I recommend plucking vs. using a pick on the bass. Plucking will give you much more options.

Start by just trying to alternate by plucking with your index finger, then your middle finger. Start SLOWLY and stay on one string, the biggest at the top is called the E string. A great place to start. You can try moving your right hand further to the back (where the bridge is, which will give you a tighter sound, or you can move it towards the neck, which will give you a more mellow sound. Then go down to the next string (the A string). Try it there. If it is getting easier, play a little faster. You should notice two things, your forearm and hand will be getting tired, and your finger tips might start to get sore. Keep GOING!

Next try the D string, and then finally the smallest string, the G string.

Tuning your bass is important. If you can't afford a tuner, then an easy song to practice your tuning is Tom Sawyer from Rush. The beginning note to that song is low E. So playing the top (thickest) string open should give you that note. Once you have that note tuned, you can tune A by hitting the 5th fret on the "E" string. Then hit the A string open. Those should be the same note.

Once A is in tune, you can hit the 5th fret on the A string (which is "D", and play the third string down open, which is the D string. And then do the same on the D string (5th fret) to tune the G string.

Knowing where to place your left fingers on the fret board is important to keep "fret buzzes" from happening. You do this by playing not in the middle of the fret, but 3/4's of the way up the fret (closest to your body).

Finally, I HIGHLY recommend playing scales. They can seem very boring, but will provide you the ability to play anything you want on the bass.

There's a few things to take into consideration first. Do you want a 4 or a 5 string, standard neck or extended, powered or non powered pickups? I'd go with a 4 string with non powered pickups if you're starting off. As for the neck it doesn't really matter but the it's nice to have the extra octave with extended neck. A Washburn would make for a good beginners bass, it's what I started out on. Now I've got a BC Rich Warlock. Get a small practise amp and take some lessons. I wouldn't bother with any sort effects pedals yet. You don't want to go spending a whole butt load of money on this only to find out that it's not for you. After you've gotten comfortable with your bass you can upgrade to a better amp and start working on the effects.

hope this helps a bit.
good luck

Wait on your wah-wah. Just get a cheap one to start...if you want to play bass...then buy a bass..get some headphones and a practice amp...have fun..part of the fun is just in the search of gaining experience. Get to know some musicians in your area...enjoy and good luck.

Just stick with the bass for now, get the pedal later. Get a Squier bass. It's a Fender and Fender is the best brand of guitars. Where are you in the country cause I can refer you to a great place.

I recognize that feeling and I relatively desire you uncover what you're watching for. It won't fall out of the sky. God is helping individuals who get in the market and search. Seek and also you shall uncover. Knock and it's going to be opened to you.
