A recumbent is arguably more comfy. with a seat rather than a saddle. The peddle height is usually much higher on a recumbent which gives it a wind resistance advantage.(less frontal area). None on a stationary
Both will give you an equal workout. Mixing it up an advantage to both forms of cycling. You work the same mussels but in slightly different ways.
Stationary gets boring to quick. The real thing is much more enjoyable. Setting distance targets is motivating. Riding to a regular destination helps keep you at it. (Bonus almost zero pollution)

A Recumbent exercise bike is similar to sitting in a chair. This is very beneficial for those that have back problems because the backed is supported. It takes a different muscle group to use a recombinant bicycle than it does an upright bicycle.
You get more thrust on a Recumbent bicycle than you would a conventional bicycle for the same reasons. A Recumbent bicycle can be started in fifth gear because of the thrust you are able to produce from a supported back.

Here's a picture of a recumbent exercycle:

And you know what a regular exercycle looks like, right?
http://tinyurl.com/yybg8f
I've used both and here are some thoughts:
- recumbents seem more popular among really overweight people, maybe because they like the reclining position, I don't know
- when I ride a recumbent, my butt gets numb after a while
- either kind can be a good workout, but most people that I see at the gym are just pedaling easy and not even breathing hard.
As far as actual exercise benefits, that depends more on you than on the equipment

A Shovelhead IS a accepted engine with a nickname, The cylinder head sounds like a shovel to three people, different Harley's were referred to as panheads and their mid eighty's fashions tried to be Blockheads yet under no circumstances stuck on.

The regular one has a more upright seat. You're really better off on a treadmill, because these are more boring, IMO.
