Hi Cand55!!
Dogs mark things and possessions with urine, in effect writing their name on things, as a caution to other dogs that "this item or place belongs to me."

Dogs live by hierarchy, and pack standing. They reinforce this to each other every day by multiple urination on the same spot. The dog who urinates highest up or on top of the first contributor is stating his dominance.

You have to get rid of the odor. If the side of the house smells it, that tells her that is the place to go.

This is accomplished with an odor neutralizer, which is available in pet stores. (Do not use household cleaners as they contain ammonia and will attract him back to the same spot.) example: ATX's Odor Kill & Stain Remover .

When used properly it will completely eliminate these odors, discerned only by the dog, by neutralizing the scent. When areas previously used by the dog have been neutralized the incentive for using the same spot will be eliminated

Make a big deal of her doing it right. Let your voice sound all this pride and pleasure in he, when he pees in the side of the house , say a sharp "NO!" and take he immediately outside. If he pees more out there, praise be heaped on he little head.

At least it's outside! Hose down all the areas he has urinated on inappropriately, and get an enzyme cleaner to remove the scent.

As far as training: Supervise, supervise, supervise. Treat it like you're trying to housebreak him. If he starts urinating somewhere you don't want him to, startle him (NOT scare, maybe just a loud whistle) and usually he'll stop. Then redirect him to an area you want him to go in. Give him treats and lots of praise when he does. Don't try to clean it up because he will be more likely to go there again if he remembers the scent. Good luck!

So? just be happy he is going outside instead of inside. I don't see the problem of him releiving himself on the sidewalk unless you are like the character "Monk" on USA.

Sometimes my dogs will to avoid going out into the grass so their feet won't get wet. Does your dog have a problem with getting his feet wet? Or a hard surface fetish?
