It is Paper. I am getting ready to celebrate my first wedding anniversary next weekend and I was looking up ideas, you could do a calendar with pictures of the two of you, there are websites that can create that. Here is just one site of many

The top of your wedding cake, which will look and taste distgusting, but you have to take at least one bite for superstitious reasons.
The traditional gift is paper, modern gift is a clock.
Maybe have your marriage cert framed or a nice watch to tell him that you're looking forward to eternit with him.

Paper. As a present to each other, get some nice paper and write down some nice quotes or thoughts about how you feel about each other. Place in envelopes and put away safely for the future.

I know youre supposed to save the top tier of your wedding cake for the first anniversary, and the traditional first anniversary gift is paper. Hope that helps!
