This does tend to be an awkward situation. I tend to give it time after recently breaking up with someone to let the tension die down and then decide if you guys are still able to maintain a good frienship. Whatever is meant to happen, will. You can't stop the sun from rising. try not to let it get to you too much, though.

It is possible to stay friends, you both just need to stay mature about it. It will feel weird because this is a person you just spent 5 whole years with. This person was probably your best friend until the break. However you can keep things in check and remain friends. There are some things you may not want to share with this person any longer, but there are still things you can share.

If you were together that long you have a history with that person and it will be difficult to see them with someone else. It may be best to move on with your life if there is no future for the two of you. If you were dumped I would be cordial but move on otherwise you get stuck.

I tried to stay friends with an ex and then they expected me to be buddies with their new love interest. It got really difficult and I had to break away from them. It's almost as if they want the cake and eat it too and is that fair to you?

I think that there is always a lot of emotional bagage and also depending on the way you broke up, when one or the other of you starts dating again it will be tough for the other. in my view a break is always a good idea, how long depends on you guys but a good few months is probably best. You will find when you get back in touch things should be simpler. That is of course as long as neither of you aren't wanting to stay friends to get him back. His reason for wanting to stay friends could be to ease his conscience. all the best.

Not likely... one person almost always still likes the other, and when that person gets into a new relationship, the other person will feel bad and jealous.
