My pug ate a few M&Ms, which caused a seizure disorder, which lead to heart failure.
No amount of any kind of chocolate is safe.

There is actually a math equation that will tell you how much danger your dog is in after it eats chocolate. It depends on the breed, the size, the amount of chocolate, the type of chocolate and the age of the dog.
I work in a vet's office and they use this when someone calls in to report their dog has eaten chocolate. 9 times out of 10 it is a small enough amount where it causes some stomach upset. However Chocolate can be toxic to dogs and can poison them.
The best thing to do if your dog eats chocolate is to call your vet... be prepared to answer all of the information that i mentioned above.
Hope this helps.

Chocolate IS toxic to dogs; if they eat a lot, it can make them very sick, or even kill them. Chocolate contains theobromine, and that's the problem component. It does take quite a lot of this to create a problem, however, so if your dog simply snacked on a chocolate-chip cookie, you can probably relax. The main reason to refrain from giving your dog chocolate is that if he develops a taste for it, and then has the opportunity to eat a lot of it, he almost certainly will, and that's when a real problem is likely to occur. The best advice is to give your dog a treat that's good for him, and keep him away from chocolate to keep him safe. The web site below contains the formulas for both dark and milk chocolate that will be harmful to a dog. Dark chocolate is a LOT more toxic because it's so much more concentrated, so that's especially important to keep away from your dog.

It all depends on the dog. My lab once ate a whole giant sized Hershey bar and she was fine. She didn't even get sick. But then my little Shitzu ate one chocolate chip and threw up. I have heard that dogs eating any amount of chocolate can affect them in the long run, but I'm not sure whether that is true or not. Regardless on how strong your dogs stomach is, chocolate really isn't good for them.

I personally think it depends on the dog.........
3 dogs in our household are 11yrs old, all have had massive amounts of chocolate, and zero side effects (besides begging for more) and one of those 3 will only eat a certain type of chocolate, to be specific he only likes the russell stover hersheys, and lindt chocolates,
1 dog in our house hold, who is 10 yrs old (so that brings the count to 4), loves chocolate, and will do just about anything to even lick your hands after eating it.
and our other dog, who is about 3yrs old, will also do anything for chocolate, absolutely LOVES it.........
it all depends on the dog, I have never had a bad expierence with dogs and chocolate in my life (I'm 23) and neither has any of my family members.
You just have to be careful when giving dogs chocolate as I'm sure just like humans some don't like it, are allergic to it, or whatever else.

If they eat a lot of it it can cause other problems like vomiting and heart racing which can lead to severe problems. My Pug ate a decent amount of chocolate and she was just incredibly hyper for a little while, and then started vomitting a lot. She's okay now, but I was a little scared. Don't let your dog eat chocolate!

Human Chocolate? Yes if they eat a lot, they can!
If they just ate 1 little piece of chocolate, it wont kill them, but eating a lot will make them sick.
Just go to the pet store, and buy Dog chocolate.
Its just as good as human stuff! And is safe for you to eat too!

It all depends on how much you give a dog. For example, if you give a dog a whole bar of it mabye. But if you give a dog a little bit it may not affect them but they may only get sick. Sometimes i give my dog like one lil' chocolate chip and shes fine.

Chocolate can be toxic to pets. It all depends on how much chocolate, and what type of chocolate was eaten. Chocolate should never be given purposefully to a pet and if chocolate is ever ingested, contact your veterinarian immediately.

a dog couldn't eat enough milk chocolate to die. we have a miniature dacshund who ate a whole giant hershey bar and had zero ill affects.
however, baker's chocolate is different. eating relatively small amounts can prove fatal. so, yes, eating chocolate can kill a dog, but only if its bakers chocolate.
chetco, i don't dispute your dog had a seizure, but it wasn't from eating a few M&m's i guarantee you that
btw, NEVER give your dog chocolate, since it is toxic and worse, will rot their teeth.
