Use Revlon High Dimension. It works well and only takes 10-15 minutes instead of 45-60 minutes. It is about $10 a box, but our Walgreens has it on sale all the time 2 for 1. Wal-Mart would be cheaper probably. Dark blonde to light auburn is no big deal. Even with long hair, you only need 1 box. For short hair, you only need 1/2 box.

Go to a beauty supply and look at Joyco or Goldman brands of dye in 2 oz bottles. They are about $4.00 for a bottle for the dye. Then think about the peroxide. If you have gray or dark coarse hair, choose a 40 volume (strong) peroxide. If you have soft gentle "young" hair go with 10 volume (weakest) peroxide. There ate 20 and 30 volumes in between depending on the state of your hair. It's acutally cheaper to go to a beauty supply and get a proper bottle of dye and a good quality peroxide to mix it with than to by some cheesey drug store product. Of course, roots first for 10 minutes. Put a plastic shower cap over your head. That's the true secret -- the cap. Then mix it through the rest of your hair for 5 or 10 minutes under the cap. That's the best way to do your own hair. It's what the pros do and what the pros use.
You can do the same process with a stronger peroxide and a lighter color dye for highligts and streaks. Have confidence in yourself!

Clairol's natural instincts is a semi-permanent hair color which I would consider one of the best out there. It's very soft on the hair and it leaves no damage what so ever. It actually leaves your hair smoother then it was before you dyed it. It's under $10, one bottle costs about $7. Since you are considering coloring it a auburn color I would really recommend this hair color. They make some nice shades of auburn.

I used L'Oreal for the longest time. It's about $9 and always made my hair super-soft which is good. I'm using Revlon ColorSilk only because I loved the color on the box. I'm sure it's under $10. It keeps my hair soft too and for a red, the color lasts a while.

I use Clairol Natural Instincts in Sedona Sunset. I have naturally dark brown hair and I wanted a dark auburn color. I only used one box and it came out perfectly. (My hair is about 4 inches past my shoulders.) The one box was $7.50 at Wal-Mart and $8.50 at CVS. (I got mine at Wal-Mart.) My only suggestion is that you leave the color on for 15 minutes instead of 10. That way you get a richer tone and more natural-looking highlights.

I am a hair stylist and that is really a cheap price for getting your hair colored. I charge $60 for short hair and $10 extra for every 6 inches past shoulders. You should never use a box color. They contain metalic dyes. It dries your hair out extremely bad and you never know what color your hair is going to turn out. It could be green! If you mess up your hair it cost so much more money to get it fixed.(starts at $100). Another option is to go to a beauty supply store (sally's) and talk to someone there. Wella is a good color, butyou need to ask someone there what kind of developer you need (probably 20 Volume), how to mix it, and how long it needs to stay on. Good Luck!!!
