About how many hours a night do you (or did you) or children spend on homework? For each age range?

Is it too much or too little?

How much do you think is beneficial to students, and how much is detrimental?

For people in school, about how much homework do you do versus how much your teachers assign?

Details are appreciated!

my kids are in 7th and 10th grade. in 7th grade he has 1/2 hr of homework /night which I think is about right. that doesn't include any reading that is required. He also goes to school 3/4 hr early to finish up as the teachers will assist him. My 10th grader seldom brings home work to do. She arrives at the school 1/2 hr early and works through her lunch hour and spares. I seldom did homework in school because i found that if you paid attention in class, there wouldnt be much homework. graduated with a 3.5 GPA.
I dont believe in homework in primary school other than projects that the kids need help with
grades 7-9 up to 1 hour
grades 10-12 up to 2 hours

we are given way too much homework now. iam currently in drivers ed (3hrs a day after school, for 2 weeks) and i barely have time to do anything. i sleep, go to school, go to drivers ed, come home, do homework, and start it all over again. i believe that each class should have no more then 30 minutes of work. i dont quite understand why these teachers assume that the world revolves around their class. "it i'll only take you a few hours...you'll have all night," what they dont know is that on top of that we have 3 other classes.
