Stay is a fine name for a dog but you will need another word to use when wanting to actually make the dog stay. It won't work as good if you've taught him stay as a command already though. I would use the word "wait" instead of stay. Always say the pets name first before giving a command, this ensures you have his attention prior to asking him to do something.

It's not cruel.. just make sure when you want the dog to actually stay, you use a different command than the word "stay" or the dog will be confused and won't know what to do

I don't know about the cruelty, but it should would be confusing to the dog! Who wants to make him nuts all the time? I would suggest a different name that isn't a command. I think you'll have a much happier camper!

Dog's aren't born knowing English. Unless you teach him the command "stay" means to remain where he is, then continue giving him contradictory information, no it's not cruel. If you do teach him "stay" and then continue to contradict yourself, you will make your dog blow a fuse. He will be too confused and will go crazy trying to understand you or will just stop listening all together.

cruelty- probably not. but anyone who finds amusement in confounding a dependent creature doesn't deserve to have the dog.

sounds like one of those silly questions to me! Why would you name him that?! He wouldn't mind, you'd judt have to use a different word for the command stay

FOOL! Your question is miscategorized. To counter what you pass off as wit: it depends on whether you teach the dog any meaning for "stay."

mmmm have to think about that one, but maybe he could learn stay means his name and you could rename the stay command as something else, as long as he doesnt learn stay as a command
