Without knowing the whole story it's not possible to say. It might be impolite, yet entirely appropriate at the same time.

The method of saying it (i.e. the words "shut up") are not polite at all. It is up to you to determine when you have said enough, but if someone feels the need to tell you to shut up, then maybe you should ask yourself if you are saying too much at that time. But surely someone can find a better and nicer way to tell you they have heard enough.

Were you being obnoxious? If so, it could have been relatively polite, depending on what they could have said, or desired to say.

No, that is not polite. That is why there is so much hate in the world; Because no one has respect for others. There are many other ways to tell someone to be quite. Like: "Could you please be quite?" or "Please, tone yourself down." lol.... Yeah... Cheesy I know, but still. It is much better. lol

The simple answer - no, it isn't. However, depending on what you have been saying, it may be correct.
