our family wants a dog- my dad is the only one who has had experience as a dog owner but weve had other animals- cats, rabbit, fish- but we realize there is no comparisson to taking care of a dog. we like calm, not too hyper, medium sized dogs. oh and my sister is allergic to some animals so we're trying to get a hypo-allergenic or one who doesnt shed alot. any suggestions? help needed!

Well if you go to your local dog resecue centre they can advise you on what dog is suitable and you are more likely to get a calm dog that will suit your families needs.

They very often have pedigrees there thesedays as well as mongrels.

It means you'd be giving a good home to a needy doggy!

An older mutt from the shelter!!

Puppies can be such a hassle when you're a first time owner. Get a calm, animal friendly mutt (or purebred) from your local shelter.

well if you want a medium size then i'd go w/ a dachshund(there r miniature and regular ones)they dont shed to much, they r only hyper wen u want them to be,they r protective, they take a little time to potty train but not that long.they r great w/ little kids, because they dont really bite much.

yorkies are great for a first dog. they don't shed- they are have a "human" type hair instead of "fur".
they can be small to medium size. low maintaince, good disposition, no health issues with the breed, they live a long time- mine is 14yrs. great with children, they can be kinda "yappy" and terratorial.
good luck with your pup

I would suggest a Bichon Frise, but you can go to the American Kennel Club web site and check out other breeds.

you could get a chinese crested dog because they have no fur but all dogs shed but the usually calm and laid back breed would be my favorite a shar pei or a golden retriever.

You can't go wrong with a Jack Russel Terrier... they are great pets, smart and clean and good with kids. You won't be sorry.
