Energy is the source of our economy. It provides your transportation, your heat, your lights, the machinery we depend on, and the food we put into our stomachs. Right now we get most of our fertilizers and pesticides from petroleum. We also use petroleum to power the farm and transportation machinery that gets food to the store. We are now in a situation where we are now using more calories (energy from petroleum) to get that food from planting the seed to the table than that food gets from just sunlight.
What happens when the petroleum supply ends? We need don't need other sources of energy other than petroleum if we wish to limit the global population to around one billon people. We can last centuries with what we have if that were the case. The problem is we have six and half billion people that need feeding and transportation and things we make and healthcare and and and... If we want to maintain the population and lifestyle we have become accustomed to, we need a newer abundant and environmentally friendly form of energy. Petroleum supplies are not infinite.

So that we can run out lives on other energy sources other than oil because as it is right now our lives revolve around oil. Oil is not gonna be around forever, so we need to find alternative energy sources that can fill the void that oil will have in the near future.
Hope that helps

Matters of pollution aside...
I was around for various ice storms and hurricanes, when power was out for pretty extensive periods of time. If nothing else, people actually being independant from the grid would have prevented a lot of problems usually associated with power outages.
Not to mention that would be one stranglehold terrorist countries would not have, if people had power sources that didn't depend on their oil for instance.

Unless you have had your head in the sand you should know. The war in Iraq is about money and oil. We are poisoning our water and air with fossil fuels. When fossil fuels run out, then what? Need I go on?
