Lacrymosa Definition

Lacrymosa is one of the settings for a Requim, which is a special mass for funerals. Since composers love setting the texts of masses to music, when they write music for a Requim, they often make the Lacrymosa section into a song. It means ruffly "tearful that day"- and is one of the sadder movements in the Requim mass. You may know one of the most famous settings of the Lacrymosa from Mozart's Requim. For many years, I don't know if they still do it, people around the world would start Mozart's Requim at the moment the first plane hit the world trade center as a memorial. Since they did this all over the world at their own local time, the Requim would be sung constantly that day somewhere in the world. I did it for the first few years while I was in college, but now I'm unsure if my school has kept up that tradition.

Lacrymosa means related to sadness. The song Lacrymosa by Evanescence features elements of W.A. Mozart's 'Lacrimosa' from his 'Requiem in D Minor'.
