The best way is to start with the Quran, meet some Muslims, and gain as much insight into the religion as you can. The more you study and learn, the better for yourself. Once you've decided that Islam is the right path for you, all you need to do is take Shahadah (declaration of faith) and you are a Muslim! :-)

Lol, as you can see from the above answers, lack of education benefits no one!

I would recomend you to get a Quran with English translation or any other language.
Find some Muslim friends and I mean Muslims who really practice Islam, maybe Muslim clubs in colleges and schools will be a good start.
Go to mosques and sit with the Imam and scholars.
On the net I would recommend everyone to go to:
http://www.islamalways.com
if you want to chat, sometimes scholars appear in the room and you can ask them questions. When you go there, ask how would you recognize a scholar.
http://www.chatislam.com
P.S. You would find a lot of people who would try to make you change your mind on research on Islam. I say even if you dont convert, still, it is really good to learn about Islam because most of the people, especially, here in the US, have misconception about this religion.
thanks

well if you know any muslims you could talk to them directly about it and see what they tell you anyway i'm agnostic and it's kind of funny but not hahaha funny more like an ironic funny anyway i was in a library one day a few years ago when i was looking to read the qu'ran just out of curiousity anyway i found this paperback version of the qu'ran with english translations and this one muslim women approached me now i didn'y know this women so of course i was kind of guarded towards her as i know that muslims usually gather in a crowd of at least 3 or 4 sometimes more sometimes 2 or 1 very rarely though anyway she offered to get me an original qu'ran anyway i went back to that library 3 weeks later mind you and there she was with the original qu'ran anyway what i'm saying is get out there and maybe you'll learn more and find what you're looking for but i do say to be careful when dealing with strangers by the way i still have that qu'ran that she gave me to this day

May Peace Mercy and Blessings be on all of you:

well lets start with the first Pillar of Islam i.e
SHAHDAH:
Give witness that there is no GOD but Allah(swt) and Muhammad (pbuh) was his messenger.

By doing this you are baring witness that you worship none but Allah and Muhammad(pbuh) was a human (the choosen one) and was the Messenger of Allah.

thats the main Piller of islam and the whole deen(religion) is based on this piller .as Allah said in the the Glorious Quran:

Nisa CH:4 V: 48 AND V:116"VARILY aLLAH WILL NEVER FORGIVE SHIRK (ASSOCIATING PARTNERS WITH HIM).

Any other sin if he pleases ,he may forgive as he is the most merciful and kind.

Scondly:TRY TO UNDERSTAND ISLAM FROM ITS AUTHENTIC SOURSES:
The most important thing to understand is that if you want to know about any religion than go to the authentic sourses of that religion and not the followers because some times the followers may not convey the right picture of the religion they follow for many reasons( cultural and social influence and Media etc).(for example if you need to know any thing about christianity than read the bible.).similarly if you want to revert back to Islam than understand Islam from its authentic sourses i.e The Glorious Quran and The Sahih(authentic) Hadith of the prophet(pbuh).

and if you are in doubt regarding any thing mentioned in Quran and the Sunnah(hadith)than ask the person who knows the best( as Allah says in the Holly Quran)."if you are in doubt ,ask the person who knows".

Concept of God in Islam:
DEFINITION OF GOD IN QURAN:
the best defination of GOD i can give you from the holly Quran is from surah IKHLAS CH:112 V:1-4.

"SAY ALLAH THE ONE AND ONLY; ALLAH THE ABSOLUTE THE ETERNAL;HE BEGETS NOT NOR IS HE BEGOTTEN;AND THERE IS NONE LIKE UNTO HIM"

this verse to me is the touch stone of theology and no best definition of "GOD" can be found in any other scriptures.

Read Fatiha(ch:1 ) For the guidance to Sirate-mustaqeem(right path).

By pronouncing and believing in the Islamic creed - syahadah - "I testify that there is no god but Allah (The God), and that Muhammad is His messenger"

And by believing in the six pillars of Islamic faith:
1. The belief in God
2. The belief in angels
3. The belief in God's words/holy books
4. The belief in God's messengers
5. The belief in the Day of Judgment
6. The belief in predestination

When engaging a Muslim in conversation, be friendly and tactful. (Prov. 25:15) Bear in mind that Muslim beliefs are firmly entrenched and that most of them have been learned by rote. Thus, reasoning on religious teachings and proving to themselves what God’s will is has not been a part of their spiritual development. (Rom. 12:2) To help Muslims, patience and understanding are vital.—1 Cor. 9:19-23.

Avoid using expressions that would in a Muslim person’s mind link you with Christendom. Make it clear that you are no part of either Catholic or Protestant religion, that you are different. Refer to the Bible as the Book of God. Since Muslims have an aversion to the term “Son of God,” it is usually best not to use it or to discuss this subject until spiritual progress has been made. However, you can speak about Jesus, referring to him as a prophet or messenger. Avoid arguing. If you observe that anger begins to surface, politely take your leave immediately.

It is best to speak with just one person and not with a group. Usually, it is advisable for women to witness to women, and men, to men. Obviously, there are exceptions to this, but good judgment should be used. Also, many Muslims are sensitive about what they consider to be immodest dress and grooming by women. Sisters need to be aware of this.—1 Cor. 10:31-33.

Be very, very, sure that's what you want to do and are not going to change your mind.

The debate in Islam concerning people who leave the faith appears to centre on whether they should be punished, or whether they should be killed.
(recent article from seemingly non-extreme site below, but see the other articles in the same location.)
"...Muslim jurists are unanimous that apostates must be punished, yet they differ as to determining the kind of punishment to be inflicted upon them. The majority of them, including the four main schools of jurisprudence ... agree that apostates must be executed."

Do thus note that freedom of religion only works one way.

(edit: this post seems to have attracted considerable disapproval. I e-mailed two Islamic posters immediately after this reply, requesting they comment on the fairness of the site and article, and saying that I would remove or amend it if necessary. I have had no feedback. My e-mail is open, always has been.)
