10 years ago I lived and worked in New York. The thing that caught my attention more than just the 100 mile an hour way of living was the constant choir of car horns. Cars would be stopped on red and yet the whole group would peep their horns as if it was the 'norm'. I asked a taxi driver that same question and he looked perplexed and just as confused as I was and then without realising it started pipping his horn while on red. Is this just New York culture?

Call it the rush-rush of New York City. I usually see the people honking on a red light when someone in front of them drives rather slow (or slow to what the driver wants them to do) and when the light goes red, the honks happen.

Another explanation could be that there is a HUGE amount of traffic on a given street and since no one is moving, when a light goes red, people honk like crazy since they didn't move far to begin with and just want to get to their destination

I was about to say it's mostly the cab drivers and then you mentioned that you saw your cab driver doing it. It seems like there is some sort of war going on between all the cab drivers and they honk the horn at each other no matter what's happening. I'm sort of serious. Once one person hits the horn, everyone else assumes something is going on so they start honking too. There is too much honking for no reason in NYC.

Things have changed a little.
You can now be ticketed for blowing horn as you described.
Not to be politically incorrect (right), but there are so many different cultures represented in NY that they think they're back home where hornblowing is a sport.
Guess it is NY "culture"

We're always in a hurry and mostly we do it so the person can go as soon as the light turns green. It might annoy you and it does get some killed but it won't change. It's the morn here.
