Sometimes people are just to afraid of the unknown, there is a lot of security in familiarity even if that familiarity makes you unhappy. The saying 'better the devil you know' comes to mind. Sometimes it's because there are a lot of financial ties involved, it's not so easy to just walk away. Sometimes it's because only one partner is unhappy and the other seems happy, and the unhappy person doesn't want to destroy the happy person. There can be various reasons. Nothing to do with feelings is ever that straightforward. Low self esteem is another factor, when someone believes that they aren't worth anything better and so they put up with a terrible relationship. This is perhaps one of the most tragic reasons.

I would never do something i was not happy about and that includes realtionships ... i would rather be alone than be sad with someone

People who do this are indeed too afraid to make it on their own. They'll take whatever they can get. Others, like me, have more self-respect than that. Way, WAY more.
