Alot of times a persistant backache is symptomatic of a old or worn out mattress. A firmer mattress can help alot. I had problematic backaches when I was younger. Doctors tried physical therapy, cortizone shots into my spine (Rather unpleasant) and traction...etc. I finallt went to a locally famous Orthopedic surgeon and he advised me to get a firmer mattress.
I suffered from 2 years of bad avise from other doctors. I bought a new mattress and back problems have been gone ever since.

i use ibuprofen that's if i know its a back sprain that i was aware that i did, i never use heat as it increases the blood flow to that area and causes more swelling in case of injury but sounds like this has continue for to long and you should seek medical advice if not better within the week might be an underlying cause such as kidney infection, kidney stones

Take a warm bath, but use rolled up towels in the bath so your back isn't just against the tub.
Naproxen sodium is a great medication for aches and pains, it always works for me.

Get in the shower, and use the hottest water bearable on the soreness. Hopefully you've got good water pressure.
