Allowing him to breed is the worse thing you could do to 'calm him down", as he will then have a one tracked mind, and it will be on escaping and finding another female..It will only add to your problems. However, it may help greatly to have him neutered, as his focus will be on YOU, and not on the intriguing scent of local females.

ALL professional service dogs are neutered/spayed for just that reason. It makes them focus on learning..and their handler/trainer.

He migh calm down a lot if you don't feed him any dog food with corn in it, as corn converts quickly to sugar, which makes dogs (and kids) hyper..

Well it all has to do with how calm you are and he may never calm down because of his personality, and your MALE Mini Schnauzer is never going to have puppies because Male dogs don't have puppies.

A male anything is not going to calm down because he sired puppies. The actual puppy-making process and the puppies that arrive a couple of months later have nothing to do with each other in his little brain.

Neutering him could help him "calm down" especially if one of the reasons he is not calm is because he is exposed to female is in season.

Exercise your dog + train your dog= best formula for calming a dog down.

BTW I would urge you to double-check any canine advice you get from whomever told you breeding your dog would calm him down.

Haha, no! It just depends on the dog's personality. Neutering him would probably help. It does somewhat slow down their metabolism and might help take the edge off (plus you won't be contributing to the horrible pet overpopulation problem). Is he trained? Perhaps take him through basic and advanced training. Sometimes giving them something productive to do (like learning commands and tricks) can give them some focus and chill them out a little. Also, make sure he gets lots of exercise... long walks, runs around the dog park, long games of fetch, etc. Otherwise, he'll just be bored and high strung.

NO!! They do not calm down from having a litter! Get your dog neutered ASAP! Also, males can't have puppies, but neutering him WILL decrease his humping of the leg, wandering the neighborhood, decrease his chances of prostate cancer and issues that go along with the prostate, decrease his aggression and make him a calmer, happier dog to be around.

Generally letting a male sire a litter makes their behavior WORSE. plus you have 10 more hyper pups. Lauren has a point -15 minutes of ball or 15 minutes of the mental excersise of obedience & you then have several hours of tired dog and much of the day of not bored yet dog.

Any dog will calm down as long as YOU are calm and don't make a spectacle of them being hyper. To help...make sure your dog gets plenty of execise each day, through long walks. Your dog is trying to tell you something so pay attention.

Some dogs never calm down. You can get "Rescue Remedy" at a health food store and give it to your dog.
Lots of people who show their dogs use this to calm them.
Also another thing they often use is Melatonin tablets you can also get at the health food store.

Neutering helps. Having puppies doesn't. But if you try for it anyway, good luck getting your male to have puppies.
