It is usually unacceptable in adult company for one to tell another about their excretory needs. Usually that is for young children to tell their mothers.
I think a brief "excuse me" before you get up to use the restroom would be satisfactory in any public situation.

If it's at home I just say "I need to go to the bathroom". If in public with guests, I politely say "Excuse me, I need to use the restroom."
I don't explain what exactly I'll be doing in there like peeing, pooping, or changing a tampon. That's TMI.

If an explanation is needed as to why I go into the bathroom, I will usually tell people that I need to wash my hands, becasue before I leave the bathroom I will be washing my hands. I choose not to go into specifics because I'd rather people think I'm obsessive compulsive than think about me making soft serve.

Usually I'll just say I have to go to the restroom, it's none of their business what exactly I needa do there. Do they wanna know if it was big or little, soft or hard too? LOL!

I usually just say, "I hafta go to the bathroom, 'scuse me." and try not to be specific. My fiance always says stuff like, "Brb, gotta take a s***" and I wish he could be a little more mannerly than that. *rolls her eyes*

i usually say, "semileptonic". i never say, "i have to go make semileptonic", or, "time for me to squat on the toilet and do the semileptonic", or anything like that. I just like to say the word when i have the urge to defecate.
