My daughter aged 21 is experiencing acute pain in her back and down both legs (I did write earlier today). She has just informed me that she has been constipated and wondered if this could be part of the problem. One of the answerers did mention urinary/bowel problems - Blah? are you still out there?

Poppy,

I've looked at your previous question about this urgent condition and Blah raises a good point.

A herniated disc can produce the symptoms, esp. the sciatic pain in legs. There is an uncommon variation of this that Blah mentions (cauda equina syndrome) and such a condition should be evaluated by a medical doctor as soon as possible.

Constipation is not the cause of your daughter's pain. It's just a symptom.

An MRI is the best diagnostic tool. X-rays do not show soft tissue, and spinal discs are soft tissue. MRIs are extremely expensive, could you possibly consider arranging this. Please get to a doctor in a major teaching center or hospital first, and work from there.

Another correspondent (Eve) mentioned that herniated discs do heal without surgery. She's right. However, the presence of the relatively rare cauda equina syndrome usually suggests surgery. There's an urgent or emergency aspect to this.

Whatever you do, chiropractic could be harmful until you have the correct medical diagnosis. Any manipulation of the spine could worsen the condition.

Wishing you both every good fortune. In the meantime, please comfort yourself by keeping in mind that constipation could easily accompany the severe pain without the cauda eq syndrome. One thing at a time !

I cured my sciatica with this natural treatment http://cure-sciatica.info
Normally, I would not answer a question like this as my expertise is generally in medication but I had severe sciatica while I was pregnant with my 3rd child (after having had twins) and I had sciatica so bad that I was finding it difficult to walk. I tried massage therapy and physical therapy and could not take medication
I went to the chiropractor and the pain was instantly relieved. My hips and lower back were out of alignment because I had carried twins the year before. On occasion a Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) can also work but they usually only work on one joint at a time - the chiropractor will do your whole back which works faster. Anyone who does not believe in chiropractors will tell you they are quacks - don't listen.
I don't necessarily believe that chiropractors can cure things like diabetes but they can definitely relieve some types of back pain especially if a pinched nerve is involved which is usually the cause of sciatica.

Many things can cause low back pain including constipation. How long have you had this pain? How long have you been constipated? For constipation there are many things you can do to improve and or assure that your bowels will work again. Drinking plenty of water and exercise helps. Eating enough fiber in your diet such as raw and cooked vegetables and fruits. Eating whole grain or whole wheat breads and whole wheat crackers. Try drinking a little apple juice before you go to bed. If all of these fail to work for you, you then need to make a appointment to see your family doctor. You may have a underlying physical problem that you are not aware of. Good luck to you and I hope you feel better real soon!

Constipation can cause lower back pain but in my experience not sciatica.

To add to the discussion on the vertebrae and disks...

I fractured L1, L3, L5 (Lumbar, lower back at the hip) in a climbing fall. Until I had this corrected the pain in my back and legs was very acute. She may indeed want to have her spine checked. Good luck to your daughter.

Yes, your daughter's constipation can definitely be connected to her low back problems. The major nerves that come from that area strongly influence the bowels. If the nerves are being compromised by a bulging disc or spasming muscles (which is how it sounds based on your description), constipation can result...among other things.

I hope she is going to see a doctor soon, if she hasn't already...I didn't see your earlier question.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to answer my question.
My daughter recovered with rest, relaxations and a chiropractor who worked magic. She walked into the surgery bent over with pain and near to tears and walked out half an hour later with a smile on her face and a skip in her step. :D
