the reason you are told to put your head in between your legs in the event of a crash landing is because your neck will snap and kill you quickly, thus preventing the potential of a long lingering death.

Think about it in terms of travelling in a car. In a car you have a three point seat belt meaning that you are secure around the waist and also across your chest and shoulder. If you are in a sudden impact in a car the seat belt is designed to hold you in place, however it does mean that your head can fly forward which can in extreme circumstances break your neck. That's why in cars they now have air-bags to cushion your face and head in an impact.

On planes you can't have air-bags and three point belts aren't fitted. So, if the pilot decides that there is a high risk of injury whilst landing you will be told to brace yourself by putting your head between your legs. With your head secured in this way, if you were to suffer an impact or deceleration your neck would be less likely to be injured.

No! that's rubbish and an age-previous 'city legend'. there exchange right into a BBC documentary in this some months in the past and that they concluded that in case you 'brace', it protects your strategies (your maximum necessary organ). that they had 2 survivors of a airplane crash on - they reported the only reason they survived exchange into simply by fact they 'braced' on result. the the rest 159 passengers died. i think of that proclaims all of it!

watch mythbusters.....they had an episode on that show about putting your head in between your legs and also they tested the back of the airplane where the stewardists sat to see if it was more safe there. I cant remember the results but they find an answer to your question

the reason is because..when you 'hide' your head inbetween your legs..you are acually minimising injuries to your head..especially your eyes(so that you can see where to escape later)..and also..in an impact, your head will not be thrown foward which can result a broken neck.

Your neck would snap easier if you're sitting down.
