Unripe bananas should not be stored in the refrigerator because the cold temperature will stop the ripening process. Ripe bananas can be stored in the refrigerator for a few days to extend their usage time before they become too ripe. Once they are placed in the refrigerator their peel will turn brown but this will not affect the flesh of the banana. If stored with other fruit, bananas will accelerate the ripening of the other fruit.

The skin acts as an insulator to heat. Quite often if you pick a banana in a hot country it is still quite cool and stays that way for a while.

They seem to blacken and go off quicker in the fridge not exactly sure of the reason. Maybe the decrease in skin temperature casuses a breakdown of the membrance allowing air to transfer into the fruit or moisture the other way.

Only a theory really you gotta be impressed if i'm right though.

You can refrigerate bananas. The peel will turn dark, but the fruit will be fine! Refrigerating them slows down the ripening process.

It's called chilling injury. Most tropical fruits and veggies can't take prolonged exposure below 7°C (44°F). It disrupts their metabolism. Unripe ones are more susceptible to chilling injury.
