I got spanked with a belt as a child, I turned out fine. I have not spanked my children with a belt though, my hand works just fine.

I was disciplined with a belt, a wooden spoon and even a shambok (thick black whip) but I grew up in Africa in the old days where smacking kids was normal and equipment was the order of the day.
However, as a parent I refuse to use any tools and I will never hit or punch a kid in the face or any other body part.
I have given a smack on the bum, but very rarely do I feel a smack on the bum is necessary and I always feel terrible afterwards. Unfortunately, at the time I was desperate and the kid wasn't responding to time outs and endless warnings.
I don't think smacking a child really helps. What does help is being consistent and sticking to the rules.

Well, I want go through the list of what I got spanked with. A belt was one choice, but that was usually the nicer of the many evils didn't hurt for long either. I don't use a belt I use a paddle or my hand

I got hit with a belt when I was younger but my mom typically used her hand. Its just a form of discipline but you have to be careful not to take it too far. Children can get seriously injured by parents who are SO angry at them that they beat them too hard. Just be careful.

Truth be told, I have never been hit with anything, my mom yelled and gave lectures and I came out fine. I feel that talking to kids in this generation is difficult, they listen but they still choose to do what they want to do, so when you get tired of talking most parents ground their kids but that dont work either, so next option is spankings, u dont neccessarily have to beat or abuse your kid but u have to let them know that they are wrong, most parents yell or hit their kids when all they should do is talk and when they should talk to them, they hit them, THE BELT IS A FORM OF ABUSE IN MY OPINION, THERE ARE MANYS OTHER WAYS TO DISCIPLINE A CHILD, I.E. UR HAND.. BELTS LEAVE BRUISES.. SO PUNISH THEM, TAP THEM ON THEHAND OR THE BUTT, BUT NO BELTS..

I was NEVER hit as a child and I will NEVER hit my children and I turned out just fine. I don't see the point in hitting a child all it does is teach them that its okay to hit others when they do something wrong. Some people will claim that children who aren't spanked grow up to be "thugs" however statics show that most criminals are those that grew up being spanked. I was not only spanked but I went to college and graduate school and until I quit to take care of my terminally ill daughter was a very successful Clinical Psychologist.

I got spanked with a belt. My parents kept it hanging outside their door as a reminder. I will never spank my child with a belt, I would be heartbroken if she ever feared me the way I feared my mom.....
I do believe in spanking though, I give her one pat on the booty when she's bad and won't listen to me telling her "no" and then I remove her from the situation. Seems to work very well...

People still do that? I thought that was phased out in the 50's. I got punished in two ways:
In public, if there was a cop around, my parents threatened that the cop would throw me in jail if I dicked around in public.
In private, my mom loved to scream and nag, while my dad was like "whatever, I don't wanna deal with this, don't ask me for anything until you behave."

i would never use a belt to punish my child. in my opinion it doesn't make a child act any different. as days go by, the pain will go away and the child will just act out all over again.
