I hate imports I will key one if I see one. They can just get out of my way.... Get that slow azz rice grinder with a 6" fart pipe out of my way you want-a-be!! I only buy American cars and will never own any thing else. Just to say you would give me an import and I'll stab you.

Well here's a question close to my heart and several answered it fairly well and that is maintenence and build purpose! I have 4 cars: 2 Lincolns & 2 Thunderbirds in both cases one is old an the other is newer and they are all beautiful and have been maintained properly during my ownership. I have a 1964 Thunderbird that I have owned since 1967 and it is what it is! It's not a sports car, doesn't corner well, it is not too bad on gas, but you can cruise at 100 mph all day on our wide open freeways and not worry about it. The rest are the same "if you maintain them properly" that means doing what is needed, when it is needed. A car is a big (although lousey) investment, and you likewise have to keep them clean top and bottom. If you live in a place like I do in Canada you get them rust proofed every year. It costs a $150 bucks, but if you want to keep any car you should do that especially if you plan to drive it in the winter and keep it for a long time.
I can show you any number of German, Japanese, British, Italian or American built cars that are rusted out in a few short years. I have owned at least one of each and prefer my powerful, comfortable and reliable N.A. cars hands down. So to say they are crap is just that, crap! I can't tell you how many new Mercedez I have seen on the hook of a tow truck lately and not the cheap ones!
What it is, is lack of care and maintainence nothing more. Because an American built car is cheaper to buy initially, people in our throw away society of North America abuse them. Then, ***** like hell when they fall apart and fail to realize that if you treat your Mercedez, BMW or Toyatta and Mazda etc. the same they will likewise fall apart. I had several Japanese cars the didn't make 100, 000 miles and the bodies fell off them and they were maintained the same as my N.A. cars...so don't talk to me about foreign quality that's B.S. !
Next thing is try buying a fuel pump for a foreign car vrs your Chevy or Ford.....hurry up and wait, sometimes months for a part (been there done that) if the car is made elsewhere not to mention the same part will cost you ten times as much for your import.
Sorry, but those nay sayers who are so slanted against our home grown autos should go work in Mexico or Japan or Korea for $1 buck an hour and then complain as they ride their bicycle to and from work. At least I know where my cars came from and can see the families who benefit from my investment in the domestic market, especially when I live in a motor town.
I won't even get into the "Found On the Road Dead thing" since I have never been left stranded in a Ford after 45 years of driving. I can't say the same for my foreign cars.
Just my 2 cents worth.

Because usually salesmen not engineers design the cars, overseas the geeks call the shots, which is why those ugly little Toyota trucks buried the small Ford and Chevy trucks that were much more comfortable and pretty. But now that these companies are "Americanizing" they are going to stray away from utility to extravanganze, when we need is the "Model T Ford" or "Crosley" philosophy, plain, simple, easy to repair, SPEED and SIZE is the problem with energy consewrvation in this country. If the state speed limit is 55 or 65, why do they build cars that run 120 mph? In case of pursuit by a T-Rex or tsunami or something? We need to go baclk to 1900 when it looked like steam or electric wa steh future of transportation, because it may yet be the best way forward. Or get a horse, which at least produces "exhaust" good for the garden.

It's really simple. Bad design and while there has been improvements most European and some Asian cars still are better. That is mostly to the fact that american car companies largely abandoned the car format when SUVs became the norm.
Adding more toys and gadgets is all well and good but they aren't as seamlessly intergrated into the design as most foreign cars. Comfort is another big factor, while the driver might be comfortable the rest seems more like an afterthought.

American cars are going the same way as British cars 20 - 30 years ago. High labour costs, lack of investment & development & appalling management have taken their toll. European manufacturers are also seeing their reputations being eroded including German makes once hallowed for build quality. this is not the whole story though, American cars were built for American roads - wide open spaces & really cheap gas. Thus they were not really suited for most of the worlds roads. I like the old style "Detroit Dinosaurs" and drive one on our overcrowded British roads, But this is a labour of love, my sisters tiny 1.2 liter Vauxhall can make much quicker journey times onl less than half the fuel.

The issue is quality. It is not there. I don't care for the rapidity of new models, and new body styles. That means the one you bought (for $30,000 last year is history.
Cars are built to not to have interchangeable parts within a 3 year period. Even by the same manufacturer. What a waste.
Cars have been really bad. Look at all those cars with the flaking paint jobs. Factory paint jobs. And the recalls.

I think we-"American-Built" have always put quantity before quality- ever since Mr. Ford rolled out the first vehicle off the "assembly line".
While others saw this and went for quality instead of quantity. We seem to have just recently started the later and it may be too late for our BIG THREE...
Overall i love my 88 Chevy Silverado,
I loved my 99 Chevy Cavlier,
my 94 Lincoln TownCar,
my 92 Jeep Wrangler,
my 89 Chevy Caprice,
we had an 84 Chevy Camaro too i was 4 years old but boy i remember my ma flooing it and getting pinned into the seat!-lol good times...yeah i'm not hatting, im participating!!!

They're built to be cheap and disposable, the quality of both build and materials is apalling, and they handle like ocean liners. And no, you don't build sports cars, you never have, ever. You can manage muscle cars, sports tourers and the occasional supercar (GT40), and that's about it. Everything is too heavy, and uses an engine that produces tiny amounts of power for it's size.
American cars are built as just another consumer product, not with the intention of being something really special. About the only thing they have going for them is that they're cheap, and that vanishes once you export them somewhere.

It's mostly just reputation. There was a period during the 80s that Japanese cars were superior to American cars; that's just fact. But since then American cars have been just as good if not better, but attitudes and opinions change very slowly.

Just 'cause the domestics have been going up the last couple of years doesn't mean that people will all of a sudden start liking them. The imports have earned their reputation through decades of quality products. The domestic brands will have to keep this up for some time before they get noticed.
