Can anybody tell me something about Advent?

I would like to know everything about Advent, meaning, symbols in Roman Catholic Church. I never knew what it meant... so please, tell me everything in details

Advent is a period of preparation for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Messiah, both his first coming at his birth in Bethlehem and his second coming in glory at the end of time.

Advent is a time of joyous anticipation, but also of penance and preparation for the great Christmas feast.
