I am a registered dietitian and an exercise physiologist. It depends on how many calories you are restricting and how many you are burning during exercise.

If you weigh 150 you burn 1500 a day and if you are 200 you burn 2000 a day on average with normal activity.

If you walk a mile you burn 100 calories and if you walk 3 miles you burn 300 calories.

There are 3500 calories in one pound of fat which means you have to exercise that many and or eat that many less to lose one pound.

If you weigh 200 (2000 calories maintain weight) and eat 1500 calories and walk 3 miles you will (burn 300 calories) then you will be burning 800 calories extra a day and lose one pund every 4 days but most people get more hungrey when they exercise and eat as many as they burn and lose no weight. Good luck hope this helps.

If I don't eat for a day and then I exercise late in the day and then go to sleep, in the morning I'm down from 3-5 lbs.

Should be happening all along. Some people might take a few days or a week to see some results. If you're not seeing any, consult a nutritionist.

You will lose a pound for every 3500 calories you use up in exercise/activity ABOVE the number of calories you have taken in in a day.

If you are serious about both parameters it should start very soon and carries on all the time.
