I know several people who are married or have been together for a while and haven't got kids or have no plans to. Is this down to health or financial problems or something deeper? Surely the point of life is to reproduce so.....? ???????

All sorts of reasons aren't there: They may not want a family, they may not be able to afford one, the woman's tubes may be blocked or the man might be a jaffa. Like I say - all sorts of reasons.

Children and finances are the two leading causes of divorce. Many couples would rather spend time alone with each other to build a solid relationship than to be weighed down by the responsibilities of having a child. Couples who feel that they cannot put every effort into caring for a child need not procreate. There are too many "so called" parents out there who should not be raising children. If you are skeptical of this, turn on your television and get a load of a little show called "Nanny 911." Even if the point of life is to reproduce, it doesn't mean EVERYONE needs to participate. A lot of people are not cut out to be parents and there is no shame in that.

The point of life is not necessarily to reproduce. This biological driver is deep in all creatures but It would be wrong to suggest all married couples should strive to have offspring. This ignores personal choice and the fact that the world is over-populated. Those couples who do not choose to have children may contribute to society in other ways via academic, politcal, scientific or creative disciplines. There is much more to life than breeding.

the point of life is not to reproduce anymore, the earth has over 6 billion people now, that is plenty, if a couple chooses to not have kids that is great, there are to many couples who do not even think about, they just do it then wish they hadn't. it is a life long commitment of love, time, and money and everyone should think long and hard before bringing a child in this messed up world,

There are several reasons actually. One of the moving reasons I heard was from a friend who is afraid to have children because he takes the responsibility involved seriously. He is afraid that he will not be able to provide not only enough material but also emotional and spiritual support to the child. He is concerned that he will sort of "fail" his would be children.

Other couples though tend to see children as just in the way of getting their fun or what they want in life. While this seems to be selfish, it is I guess better than having children who would be wanting in terms of attention.

I don't want children for several reasons. I don't think I would make a very good mother due to my personality [ very anxious anfd uptight ] but also for genetic reasons , there are ilnesses which I and other relatives suffer from that I would not wish to pass on. As for those who says childless people are selfish , how many parents have had children purely out of altruism ? Do people not have children because they want to ?

What a judgmental way of thinking!!! Too many people have children that they don´t care for . I don´t agree that the meaning of life is to reproduce but to live in peace with the Lord!!

its depends on the couple.

me and my boyfriend havent tried for a baby because we couldnt afford a child yet. we have decided to save up so we know we can afford the baby and everything it will need. it doesnt mean we wont have one it will just be in a few years. we cant afford a house never mind kids.

our friends nick and clair lost a baby at 20weeks and the doctor advised them to wait a few years before trying again.

my friend donna hasa been dumped by several partners as she doesnt want to become a mother.
she has never wanted kids and she feels awkward around them especailly the under 7's.

Sure, the problem could be health or money related. Also, some people just don't want to have kids. They place more importance on their career, lifestyle, etc. than on raising a family of their own.

it could be health r financial problems. Most couple i know tried to have kids for years before she gets pregnant and that's with out any major health problems. Plus most people don't tell people they are trying.

I can't have children due to health. My partner and I were very upset by this. But if the point of life is to have children then to what end are we here for? To have more children and to what end would your children be here for, to have more children? And so on and so forth.
You have stated the point of life, which people like Darwin have been asking for centuries.
It's not about what we are here for it's about what you as an individual are here for?
