When a vehicle is totaled, the insurance company takes ownership in exchange for the payoff. They get the title and a salvage title is issued.
In most cases you can buy the salvaged vehicle back from the insurance company for whatever price you negotiate with the insurance company. You should work that out with the insurance company before settling the claim since the insurance company will sell it off quickly through their normal disposal channels once the claim is settled.
From what you're saying it sounds as if the insurance company has already disposed of the vehicle. If that's the case, it's gone and you can't recover it. You'd have to track down the current owner and make them an offer. Most likely it went to a local salvage yard and many salvage yards do sell off repairable wreaks though you'll be paying them more than what they paid the insurance company.

If your car was declared totaled, and you have received compensation from the insurance company on your losses, you don't own the vehicle, the insurance company does. Eventually they will send a tow truck to where ever it's stored (if they haven't already) and they will take it to a auto recycling yard where they will attempt to part it out to be at least partially compensated for their losses.
Since you don't own the car, you won't be getting the salvage title, the new owner (insurance company) will get the title. If you are confused about this, or have questions, I'd suggest you contact your agent and ask.

Here in CA it's mentioned by means of the coverage organization to the DMV. (b) Whenever the landlord of a complete loss salvage car keeps ownership of the car, the coverage organization shall notify the division of the retention on a type prescribed by means of the division. The coverage organization shall additionally notify the insured or proprietor of the insured's or proprietor's accountability to follow this subdivision. The proprietor shall, inside 10 days from the cost of the loss, ahead the safely recommended certificates of possession or different proof of possession appropriate to the division, the license plates, and a price within the quantity of fifteen bucks ($15) to the division. The division, upon receipt of the certificates of possession or different proof of name, the license plates, and the price, shall quandary a salvage certificates for the car. So, I am definite they recognise approximately it. If you in no way sign up it they would possibly not do whatever. Though they could do anything due to the fact that technically you owe them $15. I could anticipate they may not do whatever regardless that. But, if you're pulled over, well good fortune. Failing to record this is a crime and consists of a pleasant, plus a pleasant for a non-registered car, plus due to the fact that it may not be insured they are going to cite you for that and take the auto from you additionally. If you haven't any coins and you wish to have the transportation.. My recommendation is begin saving for a brand new elementary clunker so that you are not risking all the ones fines and a crook list for that lengthy.

You can buy the car back from the insurance company and it will have "Salvage" on the title...which means you can't put insurance or plates on it until it has been "Reconstructed". You need to talk to your local DMV to find out if you can sell it "Salvage" or if you personally have to have the Reconstruction done yourself.

Dude, now I'M confused. If an insurance company is going to or has paid you for a total loss, they OWN that car.
Nevermind... I can't figure out what you are trying to ask.
