It depends on how old your dog is. I have a rat terrier puppy that I taught in about 2 weeks. I hung a Christmas bell from the door knob on a ribbon and everytime I took him outside I had a treat in my hand and held it by the bell so he had to make it ring to get the treat. I also give him a treat and praise him everytime he goes. I make it a very tiny treat. Now when he needs to go out he makes the bell ring! They can't really hold it till they are 3 to 4 months old so I didn't take my eyes off him till he got a little older. He was 9 weeks old when I got him. If you see him smelling the floor and circling it probably means he needs to pooh. I took mine out about every hour till he started getting the hang of ringing the bell. I take him out first thing in the morning, last thing at night, about 15 minutes to a half hour after he eats and anytime in between that he needs to go. He's now 5 months old. Not to say he's never had an accident because he has but I never scold him when he does. I just clean it up and take him out even if he doesn't do anything but he doesn't get that treat unless he gives me something for it! If you scold him for it he'll start hiding to do it. What I did for pee spots was; I put some vinegar in an empty dish detergent bottle and when he peed on the carpet I'd put a dry cloth over the spot and grind it with my heel then I'd saturate the spot with vinegar. This neutralizes the smell and he won't keep going back there. It takes a lot of patience. Hope this is helpful for you.

I have bred and raised Chihuahuas for years, and can tell you that what works the best is to take the dog outside every couple of hours, and use the same command. I tell my dogs, "Go pee." You keep them outside, saying the command over and over until they go to the bathroom. Once they have gone, make a big deal about it, telling them what a good dog they are and petting them. Then you let them back inside the house. Don't give up. This takes a lot of patience. If you see them going potty in the house (and only if you see them doing it), scold them, but do not spank them. If you find a little present in the house, and you don't see them leaving it, just clean it up without saying anything. They don't understand at this point what it is they are getting in trouble for. Just keep a watchful eye, and let the dog out regularly. You will need to get up during the night a couple of times to let them out also. Good luck!

Don't expect your dog to be totally in control until he is about 6 months old. However, you can start potty training at a young age.
Take him outside at least 4 or 5 times a day (more often for a young puppy). When he does it, praise him.
When he does it in the house tell him NO and BAD DOG, etc. but only if you see him do it. A minute after he's done, he will not remember and will not know what you are punishing him for.

A Chihuahua has a very small bladder, so you must get the routine down then he will know what to do.I trained mine every 2 hours then 3 then 4 ,by then she was telling me she needed out. When away from the house, I put her in the bathroom and put down puppy pads and never had a problem. You train yourself first, then them.....Good luck.

I have had lots of dogs as pets and the best way that I have found is to have a small carrier. Put your puppy in and only take it out when you are playing with it. When you first take it out of carrier take it outside, saying "outside, outside". If it goes while out, praise it a lot and take it back inside to play, putting it back in carrier when you aren't playing or you leave' or at night. Be sure to take it out right after it wakes up, right after it eats and before bed. If the carrier is small most dogs don't like dirting on their beds and if you are consistent with taking it out often, this should work. Good luck!

Walk your dog about 15 minutes after he has eaten, and do not come back until he has done his business. He will soon learn that outside is the place to go.Be consistant, and he will get into the habit soon enough.Eventually,he will let you know when he needs to be walked.
