If you're not looking for anywhere too big or too small then you have 2 real choices when visiting Ireland. Firstly you have Kilkenny which is the smallest city in ireland and is more like a big town. The nightlife is quite good and there is a young population. It's quite central too so you can visit other places quite easily from there. Secondly you have Galway which is on the west coast and a thriving party town. Though it is bigger than Kilkenny it's not so big that you will have to worry about getting lost. This is the best place in Ireland to come if you want to have fun. Nightclubs are open 7 days and there is a large student population, though this can be avoided if it's not your scene. If you're not planning to do much exploring other than in the local area, this is the place for you.

Fly into Shannon and avoid the big city altogether. From there Galway is a great small city, lots to do, beautiful, and has all the nearby fabulous scenery out in Connemara. Go to Clifton on the Atlantic coast and another good size town, but not a city is Westport in Co. Mayo.

I second Kerry.

Make Killarney your base to enjoy the lakes, mountains, trails and castles and at the same time be close to the town to enjoy the characters, pubs and restaurants.

Access to and from Killarney is pretty good and it provides some excellent options for accommodation for all budgets. Popular with tourists it also serves some great resources for tours, day trips, cultural events and whatever you're having yourself.

Have a great trip!

Galway CITY. It's small, it's cute and artsy, full of great shopping, and great nightlife with all the little pubs. It's also right on the [west] coast, so you can go on quick day trips where the landscape is stunning (cliffs of moher(sp?), Aran Islands, etc...)
It's also quite safe and easily explored in a few days.

I hope you have a great time. I thought that country was okay.

Anyways, try Galway and Cork. You will like them both because they are not too big but still have a city feel. You may like Galway the best - it is even smaller than Cork and only a short drive from Dublin.

I'd say anywhere around Cork and Kerry. The cities are not too huge and you are also close to the country for sight seeing =)
