I think it's infected with something, but I can't figure it out. Thanks for any help.

Rather than doing all the deleting, uninstalling, etc. manually, download ccleaner. It is a free and simple to use utility that will "clean" your hard drive of old and unnecessary files. Be sure to read and follow the instructions closely. Deleted files will be gone for good. Then run defrag and reboot.

Before you do something drastic like reloading the OS, try defragmenting the harddrive. Most of the time this function can be found under Accessories and System Tools.

Also, before you defrag, go to the Add/Remove Programs function and remove any old software programs that you are not using. This will help free up some space. But unless you have a very old computer, RAM is not generally the problem.

You can also try a site called trendmicro.com. They provide a free online virus scan. Though I'm not sure what they could catch that Norton and McAfee missed.

If all else fails, you will have to reload the OS. If you are at all unsure about doing this - take your computer to a professional.

First you have to understand Windows ain't a very efficient operating system, and it loads lots of stuff and some junk you don't need into memory every time you boot up. Even some ISPs load junk on bootup.

Second, If you've run all the great software to catch viruses and spyware, why would you continue to think it's infected??

How much memory do you have?
What is the size of your hard drive and how full is it?

P.S. I suggest unloading one of your virus checkers and keep only one. Sometimes they tend to fight each other, which could be part of your problem.

Start with a decent anti virus program like NOD32. use the free trial and scan the whole computer from safe mode with NOD32. Delete all the temp files by clicking start then run and type %temp% in the run window. Delete all files from the window that opens. Also delete all temp internet files from IE right click on the icon for IE and left click propeties. Clear all temp files etc.
Be carefull what you install. NOD32 Rules www.eset.com

Normally, the first thing I do is defrag my hard drive. Usually all it takes for Windows performance to bottom out is for a critical file to get fragmented.

If that doesn't help, use Task Manager to look for any processes that seem to be using excessive amounts of CPU or memory. Also, if you have a lot of those antivirus programs installed, they can really bog down your system.

The nuclear option is to reformat your PC hard drive and restore.

Add or remove program tool and remove any unwanted programs and defrag..that's all I Know....
(control alt delete) and check to see what programs is running and how much memory it's using(xp).....plus it'll give you an idea of the suspected name of the bad prgram.

Some times loading and unloading and usage of pirate softwares .... continuous changes make the system very slow ... you may have try with reinstalling the operating system and if needed you may have to format the harddisk once and install once the required softwares.

Before that try once by defragmenting the harddisk

Are you sure it's slow or it hangs or take forever to do something?

If it's slow, you probably have alot of junk files you should delete. Try to defragment your harddrive.

hope this help.

Format your hard drive. Start fresh.

You could also try running those programs in safe mode.
